Art to Zucchini and Everything in Between
I’m an illustrator who lives beside the sea on the west coast of Canada with my family and an imaginary dog. Sometimes two. I have a background in animation, film and graphic design. I also love to take photographs, which gets me away from my desk with all those teeny, tiny bits of paper!

I’m a Canadian artist living by the sea on Vancouver Island, creating paintings, collages, and photographs that are bold and colour-infused. All my work, aside from the photography, is proudly handmade with scissors, glue and paint; many with 3-dimensional aspects.

With a background in animation, feature films, television and theatre, my many creative pursuits have led me to the joys of illustration. Colour, wit and a good dose of play are what I aim for, using collage, paint and a strong graphic design sensibility. For the past ten years, I’ve contributed illustrations to numerous magazines and newspapers on a regular basis with editorial, fashion and botanical themes, while my heart still belongs to children’s illustration.

I’ve created a line of greeting cards, which you can find at my Etsy shop, and I’m delighted to be creating an ongoing series of photo-collaged jigsaw puzzles for Cobble Hill Puzzles/Outset Media. I also write the blog ‘Children’s Illustration‘ with author/illustrator extraordinaire Julie Fortenberry. You can find all my social media sites at the top of my home page, and my Instagram page has all my daily photographs.

In a  world of conflict and division, this is the story of two very unlikely animals who are born literally joined at the hip. Their life journey and close proximity force these two creatures to learn to get along, or they will not survive the Amazon jungles of their village home.

This unlikely pair are born together in the tradition of the Mexican Alebrijes, which are brightly colored Oaxacan-Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical creatures originating from the paper mache- and/or-wood carved adaptions which were pioneered by Arrazola, a Mexican craftsman in the 1930’s. Miraculously enough, this is the story of an Alebrijie that actually comes to life as an African Lion and a South These two animals have no choice but to learn the lessons of cooperation and understanding which results in appreciation and shared love. Through their newly gained empathy and understanding, they begin to resolve their frustrating differences through a multitude of hilarious adventures. This children’s story provides a humorous example of two characters forced to live together as one and how they grow from a place of constant irritation with one another to a new place of understanding, flexibility and love.

About Nathalie Collange:  Addressing the human being, no frills ..

Born in Africa.

Autodidact.

Her painting is direct without pomp, delivering pure and violent emotion ..

“Painting to tell all … and if the echo is, peace finally arrives …
Paint to clear up darker, until the final agony.
If burn because there is not other way. ”
Her first series “Face to face” is an encounter with the world, a step toward “the other” in the psychoanalytic sense.
Her painting is unvarnished, gushing like a too long withheld verbal flow.

“Nathalie Collange, fascinating or disturbing, her expressionism is very strong and very current. “- Jean-Henri Maisonneuve – The Brigade Contemporary

No alternative but to burn yourself. Her first series  ” En tete à tete ” is a ” rendez vous ” with the world, a step forward towards ” the other ” in an psychoanalytic sense.
Her work is open minded, powerful, like an unleashed verbal flow.

“Nathalie Collange, fascinating or disturbing, her expressionism is not only very strong but of today.” Jean-Henri Masioneuve-La Brigade Contemporaine

Nathalie Collange’s expressionistic art works  capture the heart of the human soul in its transformative wrestling with the inner self, the outer world, and the many complexities of emotional and energetic release. –Janis Kirstein
