Anna Hryniewicz draws us into her colour fields by her vigorous, dramatic and energetic painting. I want to live in these colourscapes – whether they be landscape, mindscape, or heartscape. Once we had to travel to immerse ourselves in the experience of other visual art traditions; now the vibrancy of other traditions comes to us in the guise of an incoming generation of artists from other parts of the globe. Anna Hryniewicz is part of this new force which will invigorate and augment visual art culture on this island, in particular the practice of abstract painting.

… The works of Anna Hryniewicz result from artistic considerations of the light problem in the picture. In her abstract compositions she makes an unusual record of light which constitutes a synthesis of her personal experiences. With great patience and inquiring mind she creates colorful compositions and in this way she presents her emotional and visual feelings by means of painting. The intensification of such a mature artistic ‘translation’ comes from the clear composing of colorful ranges in which the author moves with natural grace and intuition. Spontaneity of painting expression, deep sensitivity as well as humbleness in arriving at interesting solutions all determine the values of this painting. The meeting with her pictures is a journey through extraordinary lit up remote parts created on canvas thanks to great sensitivity and imagination of the author…’

Artist statement:

I create art that resonates with my life and I hope it brings emotional experience that others will recognise in their own existence. As I struggle with life’s difficulties, loss, and defining who I am in the world I try to capture moments in time. This is how I feel the real beauty and flavour of life.

I have been painting abstract art since I obtained my MA in Fine Arts in 2004. But I have loved and leaned towards abstract ever since I can remember.

I create works that are about colour and line, I explore surface in search of light, gesture, space and motion. I have an open and dynamic practice, which doesn’t have a formula, it’s all about experimenting and looking for interesting solutions. Once I begin to paint the original idea evolves in unexpected way through a messy, intuitive process of collecting marks, traces lines and overpainted surfaces.

When I start painting I step into the “unknown” to discover something new, that I cannot plan beforehand. I am constantly looking for lines and colours that create evocative, emotional image. I draw and paint over until I feel the work is complete. Each piece becomes very personal and evolves through “chaos”, with marks and traces of the previous layer. I carefully decide which of them will stay, and which will go in order to let others exist.

Biography:

Anna Hryniewicz born 1975 in Wroclaw, Poland.

Graduated with distinction from Wroclaw School of Music (Piano Performance);

and University in Poland (Art Education, Painting) and in 2004 received Masters in Fine Arts with distinction.

Alongside my painting work, from 2000 to 2007 I was a graphic designer in multimedia companies, and illustrator for children magazines, and a teacher of art and music.

I moved to Ireland in 2007 and until 2010 I worked with preschool children running creative art activities. From 2011 to 2015 I ran art sessions for adults and children with disabilities in Dublin.

But first and foremost I am a painter.

I was shortlisted for the Winner Prize Award in RUA RED 2015 Winter Open Show in Dublin, and my works can be found in private collections in Ireland, the UK and Poland, as well as in OPW Ireland’s public collection.

“I think I do better painting when I’m calm, and meditation is definitely helpful for that. For me painting can be a kind of meditation in itself: not always, but the best painting sessions for me are when I’m totally focused on the process, and get into a completely intuitive state of mind. I don’t actually “think” about colors or brush marks or shapes, I just do it—or it just happens. Of course a lot of times painting can be frustrating and disappointing but for me the best times are the most meditative.”

Rick Bennett is a nationally known artist whose works reside in over one-hundred public, academic, corporate, and private collections as far west as Los Angeles and as far east as New York City. The artist’s paintings have received many national and regional awards including the Wiesberg award for realist painting and the Norman Kolhepp award for painting. Bennett has recently been chosen for the upcoming publication Indiana Artists of the 21st Century

To me, the common thread that holds all of Rick Bennet’s work together is an incredible sense of presence with the entire universe that prevails in each image or object, whether ceramic piece, oceanscape or pattern exploration. The unique quality of “Being There” rises through the quiet emergence of shifting light in translucent ripples of the ocean bed, in the repetition of seemingly simple patterns, in the harmonious curve of a clay vessel.

All of his work radiates a centeredness most uncommon in our collective human consciousness. This contemplative awareness, often elusive in our day to day existence is revealed in his work. So many of us rarely glimpse these moments of centered awareness in our lives often spent pursuing the frantic business of living.

If you take the time to slow down, and allow the work to enter your consciousness, you will be taken beyond space and time to a place of immeasurable inner peace.

Collector’s Choice: Karine Leger

Karine Leger

Karine Léger’s approach first involves the need to deconstruct in order to lay the foundations for an introspective reconstruction. In the studio, bits of torn and cut-up paper and photographs form a growing pile on the work table. Individual pieces from the pile will be meticulously selected for colour, texture and shape, to be arranged and rearranged, assembled and reassembled, in a quest for the right balance. Each of her paintings consists of simple clean lines and a restricted palette.

Through the simplicity of her structures and the clarity of the forms, her paintings suggest a skyline or a geometric terrain. There are places where the line becomes mountain, where the gesture evokes the tide, a breath of time passing. The layers and monochrome touches add a profoundly moving dimension to these pieces.

The work of Karine Léger is a pretext for a meeting of shapes and shades which seem to emerge from a hidden light source. It creates a contemplative space for the viewer to lose – or indeed find – themselves for a moment.


Looking at Karine Leger’s work is like taking a calming meander through the woods on a gentle path in earliest Spring when the weather is mild and the atmosphere is full of the subtle promise of emerging life. Her work brings back some of my earliest memories of my grandfather and I strolling through the Smokey Mountain woods rock hunting.

About Jessica Jenney

Jessica Jenney photographs the natural world with an emphasis on intimate landscapes with a romantic flair. The idyllic beauty of Jessica Jenney’s ethereal floral and landscape images transcends time and place. Above, you see her photograph of the Flatiron Building with its distinctive triangular shape, designed by Chicago architect Daniel Burnham and built in 1902. It was allowed it to fill the wedge-shaped property located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Broadway. The building was intended to serve as offices for the George A. Fuller Company, a major Chicago contracting firm. At 22 stories and 307 feet, the Flatiron was never the city’s tallest building, but always one of its most dramatic-looking, and its popularity with photographers and artists has made it an enduring symbol of New York for more than a century.

Jessica Jenney’s black and white photographs of New York City’ s architecture present a haunting beauty of this grand city with all of its beautiful buildings and feats of engineering. In contrast, her floral photographs present bold to soft colored delicate petals and stamens, all with exquisite contrast, detail and texture.
