Stream of Consciousness: Creating a New Reality

Paintings in Memory of the Homeless


I share a studio with two other artists in Louisville Kentucky. We just recently had a very sad encounter with reality in the form of a homeless man who lingered constantly around our studio door. The story around this man unfolded in a series of tragic vinyetts leaving us all with a renewed awareness of the fact that the problems facing the homeless are, in fact, everyone’s problem.

Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrated in Our Classrooms

Dawn Smith’s Spanish class and my Visual Art class joined together for a week long unit on creating paintings influenced by Mexican Alebrijes this week at Western Hills High School in Frankfort, Kentucky.  Painting and creative writing combined together for a learning experience in Social Studies, Spanish and Fashion Design.

To learn Global challenges of how to resolve conflicts, students had to work in groups and combine at least 2 animals from 2 different continents. They had to paint the animals, list their conflicts, how the animals could resolve those conflicts and capture these conflict resolutions in their choice of creative writing from poetry to dialogue to narrative writing. The writing portion was inspired by the book “Fantasy Animals” by Janis Kirstein, where a South American anteater and African lion are joined together and have to learn how to get along. This book was inspired by Mexican Alebrijes from Mexico, created with bright floral patterns in the 1930’s of conglomerations of various animals all in one being.

This Painting was inspired by Mexican Alebrijes, by Janis Kirstein in Mercedes Harn’s art class this summer. This class was for a teacher Inservice given by The Academy with the Kentucky Center for the Arts, combining the teaching of Social Studies, Visual Art and Spanish Language.

About Alex Ruiz

The visions of Alex Ruiz range from dark and disturbing, all the way to vomit inducing cuteness and hilarity. In his paintings, the creatures of his thoughts crawl off the page and transplant themselves into the unsuspecting brain, hopefully taking residence there as well. Born in the Cuevas Negras( the Black Caves) of Hermosillo, Mexico, Alex began engraving murals on the cavern walls, and soon after, the walls of family and friends’ baby nurseries. To this day, he continues to explore the roads and depths of the heart and mind, especially the odd and strange ones, and bury the findings within his art. Alex is now a freelance concept artist/illustrator living in Los Angeles, California, lending his talents to the film, television, and video games industries.

Starry Night

“I’ve often wondered about how the night sky looked to Van Gogh when he painted ‘Starry Night.’

This is an homage to him, and to his painting, one of my all time favorites. We see him standing here, looking up at the night sky…probably in awe, as he wondered how he would capture the beauty he saw. As well, this was the view from the sanitarium he was staying at, as it’s well known that the poor guy was quite mentally troubled.

I wanted this piece to be somewhat magical and fantastic, not just a normal night painting. Hence the large moon, large stars, transparent clouds etc., yet keeping a mostly realistic feel to it.

If you see the original painting, you see so much motion…it’s as if he saw the vibration on all the objects, as if he wanted to capture the wind!

Thanks for looking, and I hope you enjoy looking at it as much as I enjoyed creating it:) Done in Photoshop in about 7 hrs using matte painting techniques.

Post Apocalyptic Disneyland

” I understand some people will get upset with this image. Let me first say though, I absolutely LOVE Disneyland! What I’m really trying to covey here is a contrast of ideas. I don’t want this to happen in reality, but it COULD. Look where we live, floating on a rock in space and being shot at by other rocks!: So let’s hope and pray a meteor doesn’t hit us, ad let’s not take images like this too seriously.
“It was a blast making this image, I actually went to Disneyland to take reference photos for it and to make sure I was placing things correctly. Done in Photoshop in about three days.

“Colour really excites me and colour next to colour is endlessly amazing. When the weather is cold, I feel warmest working with colours.

 
People often say of painting as a pastime that it must be so relaxing. Well, not really, as it can be very frustrating and make whole days vanish when you meant to do something else. But it is gripping and exhilarating on good days – we will not mention the failures!

 
I won a painting competition at school when I was about 9 and I have just one picture I painted at that time (squirreled away by my mother and found in her treasures) which I could not achieve now – paintings done by children have such a freshness.

 
Since those distant days, I have played with all sorts of different techniques, been to many workshops, exhibited many pictures, sold quite a few, bought hundreds of books, run workshops for fun and for cash, visited dozens of exhibitions – and generally been interested in art.”   Statement by Catherine Redmayne

Catherine’s love of making art stems from her childhood, when she found her true gift of expression through the visual world. Upon looking back at a work of art she created at age 9, she recognized the joy and power of the creative child, and looks to this spirit to empower her works to this day.

 

 

 “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up,” said the master artist Pablo Picasso. I would say that Catherine has definitely maintained and nourished her creative inner-child artist, by looking at her current creations. The joy, simplicity and child-like wonder of a story-tale world surrounds us as we look at each of the images shown here.

 

 

 Spontaneity and exuberance dance across the surface of each image, from “Cheerful Garden,” to “Little Red Riding Hat.”  Most definitely not contrived, these original pieces bring to the foreground all sorts of childhood memories that were once lost to a layer of rushing adulthood demands.

Thoughts from Jason Twiggy Lott

 

I’m a native Mississippi artist and have been painting and crafting for as long as I can remember. My work references both the physical and the spiritual, decay and renewal, the external and internal worlds.
The creation process is a sort of spiritual exploration for me. I try to turn off myself, my brain, and my ego when I create. I try to create from a place of pure spirit. The less I think, the better I usually work.  When painting abstractly, dirty brush washing water is just as important as new paint. Every artist working with paints has the jar of water or turpentine that brushes go in and out of while painting. I like the idea of the ‘trash’ that would normally be washed down the drain being on the same level as the untainted paint straight from the tube. It’s sort of a metaphor for how I see the world. The ugly parts of life can always be recycled and reused to help build new ideas and experiences.

The artworks I create are shrines, reliquaries, totems, altars, love letters, journals, and collections of memories. I both construct and reconstruct their history, purpose, and meaning. They are products of their environment, pieced together from the detritus of the South where I was born, reside, and work. They are rich, dark, and dirty like the history of my home. The South is steeped in a history of dark personalities and deeds. Robert Johnson sold his soul to the Devil so he could play a mean guitar. We’ve ridiculed, oppressed, enslaved, and murdered people because we don’t like their skin color. White Southerners decided it was a good idea to go to war pretty much because we didn’t feel like working our own land.

Jason Twiggy Lott: Assemblage

Our Archangel Elvis Presley died on his toilet a bloated, bejeweled drug addict, and our literary messiah, and arguably the greatest novelist in history, William Faulkner was by most accounts a rude, shut-in alcoholic. Yes, we have a sordid past colored with dark, tragic characters and bad behavior. But who doesn’t? Every nation, state, city, person has skeletons in their closet, but even today the South retains its spooky patina. We don’t progress at the same rate as the rest of our country. We move more slowly. Maybe it’s the heat. We haven’t fully covered our scars yet. We haven’t fully buried our skeletons. Our past remains relatively on the surface. Drive down any Mississippi back road and you’ll see it, feel it, and taste it.

We tend to embrace our rich, colorful, and sordid history. We seem to have an innate sense of how our past, even the nasty bits, makes us who we are today. The average, the dirty, the discarded and forgotten can all be elevated to god-like status. Lead can be turned into gold. It’s all about perspective and how we perceive ourselves and the world around us.

Jason Twiggy Lott: Assemblage

So much of the trash I find and use was once very significant to someone, but they lost it, discarded it, or forgot it. Does that negate its significance? Do we as people become less special if we’re lost or discarded? Does our past define us? Are we innately significant and special beings or is our significance dependent on how we’re remembered once we’re gone?

Ultimately, my work speaks to our fundamental understanding of the human condition, as well as our lack thereof. What we leave behind can say as much about the present as it does about the past.

“Many of my pieces include dried grasses and twigs that I adhere to the canvas during the painting process. I like the organic feel and texture they provide as well as the accidental possibilities they introduce into the process since I never really know how the paint is going to behave as it flows over and through the texture.”
